The game was written for XP and DX9, so there are bugs with "stereo mix" in the audio panel for AC97 users. There is also a complete failure in multi player. The simple fix? Add a mic to your MIC IN port. Also, you can just plug a pair of stereo headphones into the port.
Add patches 16. and 1.7 from the net if you like.
right click -> compatibility -> XP SP3
