I found this error reinstalling a user's corrupt OS and wondered what it was. Sure enough the laptop needs a new bios battery, as everytime it is unplugged it goes back to 2002. This error, Windows Update error 80072f8f, means your clock is not set right, and the Windows Update series of programs will not allow you to continue.

So, just right click the bottom right hand side where the clock and date are and replace the wrong date and time with the current info so you an update.
