3ds max 2011 slow after changing view modes nvidia 460 560ti

3ds max 2011 can become slow with any gpu, including the 460 and 560ti (2gb models from plait with dx9 settings). After a clean install of windows 7 and gpu drivers from nvidia, a new install of 3ds max 2011 made the screen redraws and polygon rotations smooth sailing.

I thought it was the complexity of the scene, but at 200,000 polys and 500 objects, that might not have been it. Video settings for the OS skin theme should be set down to not use AERO but windows classic. Logmein display acceleration should be disabled and then re-enabled as a test. Any other type of memory intensive program like Sony Vegas or AFX CS5, anything using GPU memory or cuda cycles should be shut off.

Some other things seemed to happen as well. After a bit of wireframe to full color shading, shadows, and then hardware shadow settings on and off would create a stutter that only a restart of 3ds max would solve. It seems the buffer to the gpu and the cpu have either memory leaks, bad optimization in drivers for 3ds, or just in general the OS was hosed and needed a reinstall.

Nothing is better than a quick image of win7 with no drivers and minimal software to build a quick 3ds max install, adobe cs5 and vegas pro for instance. In the in-betweens of building software and media publishing, tons of tiny programs and faulty .dll files can pile up like dust and gum up the OS. There is only a certain amount of in OS tweaking that can be done. The real magic is re-installs or a beautiful OS drive snapshot to restart from.

I was hit with a virus that slowed things to a halt and disabled the LAN chipset drivers, and it was truly undetectable, as if it were just poor registry settings and such. I had a clean image of windows and reinstalled all software for 3d and drivers for nvidia gpu and chipsets, voila. Problem solved.

The only other intermittent problem could be overclocking settings. Sometimes if you add memory to a system and don't raise the voltage above "auto" you could have drops and hangs due to that, and overall quirks could begin to happen. This occurs in summer seasons where it is very hot and the atmosphere for the computer is not regulated, and in cold winter months where heat is over the top, causing the same symptoms.
